THE GROWING NEED

For the first time in decades, poverty is rising and leaving hundreds of millions of people all over the world vulnerable.

In the face of climate change, crises and conflict, the number of people vulnerable to poverty is increasing.

Today, more than 800 million people live below the poverty line. They live without access to clean water and sanitation, nutritious food, and education...essentials they need and deserve.

Unclean and inaccessible water

Safe drinking water and sanitation are crucial to human health and wellbeing. However, over 2.2 billion people around the world do not have access to safe and clean water*.

Worsening food insecurity

Approximately 690 million people around the world go hungry, and even face extreme hunger*. This has an effect on the health, education and livelihoods of entire communities.

Lack of education and opportunity

All children and all people have a right to an education. Today, there are 250 million children out of school.** Without access to an education, employment opportunities and livelihoods are limited.

Ronita got a second chance at an education.

The Philippines has a teenage pregnancy rate six times higher than Australia’s. Countless families are at risk of falling into intergenerational poverty and despair without urgent support.

Education is vital to breaking the cycle of poverty. But all too often, women like Ronita, who become mothers at a young age, are denied the opportunity to study and follow their dreams.

With the support of people like you, Ronita was given a second chance at completing her studies and supporting her young family.

“I feel hopeful for the future…now it’s not impossible for me to achieve my dream of being a school teacher. Thank you for that.” – Ronita

Toefuata’iga’s school transformed with clean water

Water scarcity once disrupted every school day for 13-year-old Toefuata’iga and her classmates in Samoa. Her school once struggled without access to safe water, meaning students often went without clean drinking water and hygiene was difficult to maintain. Teachers had to fetch water from nearby homes, and school would sometimes be cut short, leaving children behind in their learning.

With the support of Champions for Change like you, Caritas Australia and local partner Caritas Samoa installed a 10,000 litre water tank at the school. Now, more than 300 students and staff have reliable access to clean water every day. Schools runs uninterrupted, hygiene has improved, and students like Toefuata’iga can focus on their education. She dreams of becoming a teacher, teaching other children so they will have a brighter future.

“When we opened our water tank, the parents were really happy… Now we don’t need to send the children home early, and we can keep up with our lessons. It’s made such a difference.” – Principal Ada

Priscilla’s newfound food security

In communities all across Zimbabwe and in many parts of Africa, climate change is making it harder for people like Priscilla to grow or source the food they need to survive.

With the help of generous supporters of Caritas Australia and local partner Caritas Hwange, Priscilla has been able to learn conversation farming techniques, allowing her to feed her family during this food and climate crisis.

“We are indeed grateful to Caritas for the knowledge and skills that we didn’t have before and are able to use to earn a living.” – Priscilla

Tanzania, the A+ Successor Program

The Tanzania A+ Successor Program provides training in sustainable farming techniques, entrepreneurship, gender awareness, environmental protection, hygiene and sanitation to communities across the country. The support from people like you has helped make work like this possible.

Program achievements:

Over 16,200 people have been directly supported.
More than 5,000 people have improved access to clean water, and nearly 6,700 people have improved sanitation services.
Over 8,600 people have improved access to sufficient food.
